Which is all fine and natural. If all you wish to do is express a token of appreciation to someone whose music has had a significant impact on your life, then write him, via the address I'm providing below. However, don't be dissapointed if you never hear anything from him. Chances are overwhelmingly against you ever knowing if Horner even receives your letter. This has discouraged, confused, and even enraged some. But there are some things that must be understood.
Imagine that you're a very private individual who's somewhat reclussive. You don't really consider yourself a social being. You have a loving spouse and two kids and you enjoy spending time with them, but your extremely busy work schedule often causes you to be away from the home a lot, and sometimes you're so busy that you're literally working around the clock to get one project or another finished by deadline.
Then imagine that for your entire career, you've had to defend both the aesthetics and ethics of your work to people in the industry, and also to people who claim to be fans of the industry in which you work. Also imagine that for no good reason, many people have slandered you to no end, making completely inappropriate and often irrelevant remarks.
Then imagine that you get five to ten letters per day from people you've never heard of claiming that they worship the ground you walk on.
What would you say to these people, if anything at all?
Get my point? In the last month I've received approximately six e-mails per day asking me how they can get a hold of Horner. I, of course, have his agent's address, and many people have sent fan mail to him via this address. To end the deluge of e-mails requesting the same bit of information, I am making this address accessible below, but please see things for a second from his point of view, and likely you will understand how he has neither the time nor the inclination to reply to all (or any of) the fan mail her receives.
Back in August, a dear friend of mine noted that after sending a letter via said address to Mr. Horner, she actually received a reply from Horner's bookkeeper. She [the bookkeeper] said that she normally doesn't respond to Horner's fan mail, but my friend had mentioned how pleased she would be to simply know that Horner actually got her letter. So the bookkeeper just wanted to let my friend know that Horner indeed does read all of his fan mail. However, this was in August before his amazing an phenomenal success. As a matter of physical possibility, I can't answer every e-mail I get--and answering e-mail is easy. I'm sure there are more people wishing to write Horner than wish to write me. So, just imagine what this must be like, receiving so much fan mail. It's likely, though, that he still takes time to read what people write him, but he probably doesn't have much time to dwell on anything that's written to him.
So just because he doesn't take the time to send out responses to everyone who has invested in writing him, it doesn't mean that he hates us or resents that so many people have fallen in love with his music. It just means he's busy and has a life outside of us. Some of us need to learn to get a life outside of him.
I don't mean to offend anyone, but it's possible to admire someone without that person ever being aware of your existence. It really isn't as sad as it sounds.
As an important note, however, if all you intend is to voice a simple appreciation, I'm sure every note he receives, though he hasn't time to respond, is an encouragement to him and his family. I appologise for the rant, but I really feel like it must be voiced.
That being said, I will now produce the agency address through which you can contact Horner, if you still feel compelled to do so.
