EN-FREAKING-JOY!

Cool Cool Cool Cool Cool Cool Cool Cool Cool

Edit: I know I should've put this under the "production information" thread, but I thought it was such an exclusive video of our man at work, it will probably need its own thread. Mods, if you move this back to the other thread, that's cool...

Thanks Jeremy. Very nice to see James in action! I got my copy of Avatar today, but my wife wrapped it up for Christmas before I could get to it.

How could I not share this with everyone here?! You're most welcome, Travis, and you have my condolences...

I'm glad these 4 parts are mp4 files and not flash.

This is a FANTASTIC find!

You can hear him speak when he signals the strings to quiet down.

The one thing I've always been curious about is what exactly is he listening to when recording. When he has the headphones on, that's when the actual recording takes place, whereas the rest is rehearsal. Is it the sound mix from the film? The live mix of the music? The combination? Or just the voices of the crew in the control booth?

I always thought maybe it played a click track. But it could be the synthesizer parts too... I honestly don't know though...

The only time Horner uses a click track is for the synths, which he plays himself after recording the orchestra. He uses a 'pops and streamers' method, where the film that's projected has on-screen flashes of light and wavy streams that indicate to him where the music should synchronize with the picture, allowing for a more free-flowing, organic and not necessarily perfectly time-counted performance.

Great find, Jeremy!

Here's the direct link to the MP4 file itself (Part 4), as Nick pointed out, if you'd like to save this clip on your local PC (use the right-click "Save Link As" or "Save Target As", etc., based on your browser) in case it ever disappears from that place online. QuickTime and the excellent VLCPlayer, for instance, will both play it.

I was thinking, we might also get scoring session footage and a featurette on a future DVD of the film. Here's hoping!

Do not ignore the first three parts, as I'm watching part 2 and there's a LOT more scoring footage to be seen.

Part 2
